WW94508Peter Rees, the former legal director of Royal Dutch Shell, is joining Thirty Nine Essex Street as counsel.

In a statement the London chambers confirmed the arrival of arbitration specialist Rees, with joint head of chambers Stephen Tromans QC claiming his arrival would add “a great deal of further experience” to the energy practice group.

Rees was appointed legal director of Shell in 2011 after five years as a litigation and international arbitration partner at Debevoise & Plimpton. Prior to that he was head of global dispute resolution atNorton Rose.

At Shell Rees was responsible for all legal matters, heading a division of around 1,000 staff. Rees was also a member of Shell’s executive committee.

He left Shell after abruptly in January under speculation he was fired by incoming CEO Ben van Beurden.
